But not everyone&#8217;s excited about the new content, as one of the game&#8217;s very own voice actors, Valeria Rodr\u00edguez (English voice of Sucrose), takes to Twitter (aka X) to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ElvisBadger\/status\/1811938029709496606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">air their ire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If you\u2019re going to use real-world deities, RESPECT them.<br><br>If you\u2019re basing off of real cultures, RESPECT THAT. <br><br>I\u2019m fine with things being inspired by various cultures- that\u2019s awesome. Representation is dope. But bare minimum do some research &amp; show some cultural appreciation.<\/p>&mdash; Valeria Rodr\u00edguez \ud83c\udf49 (@ElvisBadger) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ElvisBadger\/status\/1811938030992916857?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of <em>Genshin Impact<\/em>&#8216;s Natlan characters appear to be based on real cultural deities, with the new content especially borrowing liberally from Latin American and African cultures. As Rodr\u00edguez points out, the character Ororon seems to reference the supreme Yoruba deity \u1eccl\u1ecdrun, though you&#8217;d never be able to tell with Ororon&#8217;s light skin and attire. Similarly, the Pyro Archon Mavuika correlates to the \u00a0M\u0101ori fire deity Mahuika, and Kinich is likely based on Kinich Ahau, the Yucatec name of the Maya sun god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"mnmd-responsive-video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ignition Teaser: A Name Forged in Flames | Genshin Impact #Ignition #Teaser #GenshinImpact\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O2ATH__rtQo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, 11 characters have been shown as part of the Natlan content, all of which have some sort of tie to real Indigenous cultures, and all of which have two things in common: a severe lack of melanin and seemingly little to do with their associated representations. Rodr\u00edguez, along with many <em>Genshin Impact<\/em> fans, are calling the depictions disrespectful and want developer MiHoYo to do their due diligence and show better appreciation when pulling from real-world influences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, at the very least, darken the skin tone for some proper BIPOC representation. Fans elsewhere have taken to TikTok to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@chhubiiis\/video\/7390614331584531744\">share videos<\/a> of themselves coloring over the new Natlan characters to add a touch of melanin. And over on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Genshin_Impact\/comments\/1e18l3d\/natlan_character_designs_discussion_what_do_you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Genshin Impact<\/em> subreddit<\/a>, more than a few folks seem tired and resigned to the fact that MiHoYo seems to be reluctant to include &#8220;non-white&#8221; characters in the game, with one user (ValiantNaberius) saying, &#8220;I mean, I&#8217;ve seen the whitest valley girls come back from vacation with more of a tan than even our desert cast.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-reddit wp-block-embed-reddit\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Genshin_Impact\/comments\/1e18l3d\/comment\/lcsrh7s\/\">Comment<\/a><br> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/raspsleif\/\">u\/raspsleif<\/a> from discussion<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Genshin_Impact\/comments\/1e18l3d\/natlan_character_designs_discussion_what_do_you\/\"><\/a><br> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Genshin_Impact\/\">Genshin_Impact<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We still don&#8217;t know much about <em>Genshin Impact<\/em>&#8216;s Natlan content or how its characters will play into its story and world. But as Rodr\u00edguez says, &#8220;It&#8217;s 2024.
